Overview
Designed by Hennessy & Co and constructed in 1938, Charles Plaza is considered to be one of the most exciting building of its time in relation to its design, aesthetics and the principles adopted in its construction. Combining heritage opulence and modern creativity, Trico Constructions under the guidance of Ancher, Mortlock & Woolley Architects revitalised the building’s impressive art deco features with a complete refurbishment of the entry and lower floors.
Owing to the heritage balustrades, the original fitout and stairwell was deemed non-compliant by current standards and the Active Metal team was brought in to install new flat and curved laminated glass panels to the inside of the heritage balustrade, with new brass handrails at the correct height. This not only brought the original balustrades up to current standards, but ensured the character of this incredible building was not lost, but rather showcased by the clever design.
